Percutaneous Transhepatic Biliary Drainage

Abstract
Percutaneous transhepatic biliary drainage(PTBD) has played a major role in treatment of patients with biliary tract disease, especially obstruction by malignant disease.
PTBD was performed 63 times in 46 patients of obstructive jaundice for 2 years from Dec. 1990 to Nov, 1992, at Dept of Radiology, Seoul Red Cross Hospital.
@ES The results were as follows:
@EN 1) The male to female ratio was 16:7 and age range from 32 to 83 with average of 64.
2) the cause of obstructive jaundice included 41 malignancy and 5 benign diseases. Malignant disease were 31 cases of bile duct cancer, 3 cases of pancreatic cancer, 2 cases of GB cancer, metastasis, hepatoma and l case of Ampulla vater cancer.
3) In 63 cases of PTBD, external drainage was achieved in 34 cases, internal drainage in 26 cases and biliary stent was accomplished in 3 cases.
4) Decline in serum bilirudin was found in 43 cases with the most rapid decline within l wk after procedure.
5) Acute major complication occured in 3 of 46 patients.
In conclusion, PTBD is proven technique for non-operative biliary decompression and established alternative to surgery.
